If you would like to be notified when this is operational or would like assistance in working out what could be wrong with your horse, please email Gotcha Equine (including your phone number). ALLEVIATE XTRA CAL

Calcium should be given to all horses all year round. Most Australian soils are under half the required level. All horses in all situations need a calcium supplement. It's supplied separately from Supreme Australian-Horse Vit & Min because horses have quite varying requirements depending on environment and work load. Calcium keeps horses calmer and free moving and may extend their working life and is an important supplement for pregnant and lactating mares.

Calcium is vital when grazing oxalated grasses (Kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum), Setaria (Setaria sphacelata), Buffel (Cenchrus ciliaris), Green Panic (Panicum maximum), Pangola (Digitaria eriantha), Para Grass (Urochloa mutica), Sand Bur (), Guinea Grass (Panicum maximum), Signal Grass (Brachiaria decumbens) and Purple Pigeon Grass (Setaria porphyrantha)).

Horses grazing oxalated grasses or chronically lacking calcium may display the following:

  • Enlarged parathyroid gland,
  • Unexplained lameness,
  • Leg bone splints/bone demineralisation,
  • Heavy sweating can cause cause calcium imbalance,
  • Ruptured tendons, spontaneous fractures,
  • Facial crest (particularly in growing horses)/'Big Head' (Hyperparathyroidism) - swollen facial bones,
  • Loose teeth/stiff gait/short stepping,
  • Enlarged joints/joint and bone tenderness,
  • Young growing horses fail to reach expected height,
  • Obstruction of nasal passages, which may cause a noise and/or discharge,
